Altered Book: The Best of Me - Dakota & Claire

Initially, we were supposed to pick a piece from our daybook to turn into a multimodal composition, but I didn't feel as if I had enough pictures of the topic I wanted to present. During the brainstorming process, one of my classmates suggested I do an altered book instead of my previously mentioned scrapbook. I thought this would be a great way to try something new and tell the story I wanted to tell at the same time. I went to Walmart to buy a book that pertained to my "opposite sides of the tracks" relationship with my boyfriend. Then, I purchased supplies from Michaels to begin my project. The idea of an altered book is that you use the book's text as a tool to tell your story. So, I used scrapbook paper and other methods to cover up the words that weren't relevant to my story. I've included a few of the pictures from my project to show a fraction of the finished product.

This is a page within the book that depicts the adventure of teaching me how to fly fish. I include pictures that we've taken on our fishing expeditions, text to explain, and cut-outs showing the words on the page behind the paper. Those cut-outs say, "River silence."

I added stickers to the front cover to elongate the title to include our names.

I blacked out the words in the description on the back cover to make a few sentences that described our relationship. I also covered up the remainder of the long description with scrapbook paper because it wasn't relevant to our story.

This is a spread within the book that depicts the time when he taught me how to shoot a shotgun and took me hunting. I use 3D scrapbooking stickers to add to the camo background as well as the cut outs that say, "Silvery dew blanketed the ground, the song of crickets and the whispering of the leaves, she nudged him with her shoulder." This quote describes my first time hunting.

This is a page telling about how Dakota and I talk a lot about animals. He is a biology major so he teaches me in this regard too. The cut out says "we talked about all the," and then I put a piece of scrapbook paper with the word "animals" on it to finish off the quote.

This is my conclusion page that ties all the pages together with my own thought about our relationship: how "I can be myself with no apologies" and "weirdness transcends all." The picture backs up this statement and the cut out starts off my thoughts with, "She seemed to delight in..."
