Our topic will be teaching students how to develop plot through the example of a movie trailer. In particular, we will be using Finding Nemo. We are claiming that understanding how to develop plot episodically is important for students to grasp because it allows them to write a narrative, fiction or non-fiction, of their own. Our evidence of this is in the North Carolina Common Core Writing Standards for the 6th-12th grades which states that students must know how to “Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences” (p. 43 &46). After noticing students’ struggles with applying this standard, we felt like it was warranted to teach them how to develop a detailed, well-structured plot throughout their papers.
